Director of Vineyards
As Director of Vineyards Sean Higuera works with Paul Hobbs to oversee all farming operations for Paul Hobbs Winery.
Sean grew up in Piedmont, California, but many of his fondest childhood memories were on his family’s chardonnay vineyard in the northern Napa Valley. Walking through the vineyard rows with his father, Sean would often taste the grapes and compare flavors to the wines the family enjoyed most nights with dinner. This early experience linking wines with a sense of place was a big influence on Sean’s eventual career choice.
Following Sean’s graduation from San Francisco State University with a degree in environmental science, family friend Steve Matthiasson suggested he take an internship with Premier Pacific Vineyards. Inspired by the challenges of farming chardonnay in a fog drenched valley versus cabernet sauvignon on an arid hillside, Sean was promoted to vineyard manager within two years. His time at P.P.V. was instrumental in learning a hands-on approach in the vineyard and sustainable farming practices, which echo his father’s philosophy that “healthy soils promote healthy vines, resulting in healthy fruit.”
Sean joined Paul Hobbs Wines prior to the 2013 harvest. “I had worked with Paul before I joined his company, and I knew about his high standards,” says Sean. “When the opportunity arose to work directly for him, I jumped at it.”
Sean lives in west Sonoma County with Lucy, his English Springer Spaniel. In his free time he enjoys exploring local hiking trails and visiting San Francisco for concerts and art exhibitions.
