As impressive as the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs tend to be, the real glories from Paul Hobbs are his Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons. Merlot is largely mediocre in California, with few high quality offerings. Hobbs is one of the few producers who get it right.
The Michael Black Vineyard is a cool site in the southern Coombsville area of Napa Valley. The 2001 Merlot Michael Black Vineyard (aged completely in Taransaud barrels) exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a big, thick, chocolately, espresso roast, and sweet fruit-scented bouquet. This serious, big, full-bodied, rich, moderately tannic Merlot should drink well for 10-12 years.
